Get improved search engine placement by hanging out at the 'Net's most popular gathering places!
Here's a cool new way to get improved search engine placement for your web site: Spend more time hanging out at social media web sites like MySpace, Digg, and del.icio.us!
Social media sites are simply online gathering places where people share interesting, entertaining, and informative content with each other.
They're also some of the most popular web sites on the Internet these days!
In fact, according to Nielsen/NetRatings, social media sites make up five of the top 10 fastest-growing Web brands. And that means Google loves them, and awards them with high a PageRank rating.
Posting your own content to these sites is an effective strategy you can use to drive more traffic to your own web site -- not only from the social media sites themselves, but from the improved search engine placement you'll get from having more high-quality links pointing to your site!
The trick to grabbing people's attention at any of the different kinds of social media sites is to create short, snappy, and entertaining content related to your product or industry.
For example, you could...
- Compile an entertaining or informative list
- Take existing content in your newsletter or blog and repackage it
- Create a funny compilation video
- Make "how-to" videos that entertain and teach
The key to getting the most out of these sites is to start small. Check out a few of the different sites. Then choose one or two that you enjoy hanging out at, and get a feel for the communities.
Here's a short list of the most popular social media web sites to get you started:

Interesting you mention that, Derek. I just read on another blog that an increasing number of people on MySpace are 35 years or older -- and that a lot of them are getting on MySpace for business-related purposes. Don't know if it's working for them yet but will be interesting to watch...

Derek,
Great information in your Newsletter. Like you mentioned social media sites are becoming very popular. Google lists over 600,000,000. In the Google toolbar shows the PageRank for sites. It is good to look at for how Google ranks sites.

Derek, Thanks for your advice, I have a business site about the commercial barter industry and didn't think such these suggested sites would be worthwhile to pursue. With your suggestions I can see they are. Regards, Bob Meyer
